When it comes to self-storage units, there are so many different kinds and so many different amenities. However, if you want safety and security when you store something, then there are certain amenities you should be looking for and even a few you may not have considered. The following highlights some of the most common as well as a few of the more unusual security amenities to be had in a storage facility.

Inside vs. Outside Units

More and more, storage facility proprietors are building their rental units inside repurposed warehouses and old buildings. This adds an extra layer of protection for renters not only because their items in storage are protected from the elements and from theft, but they also are protected when they enter the building. Most storage facilities of this sort will have alarmed doors that only renters can get past with a special key, key fob or key card. Once inside the building, no one outside can pose much of a threat.

CCTV Cameras

Whether the facility has indoor or outdoor units, another layer of security offered by some facilities is the CCTV cameras they use to capture everything that happens in and around the building. The cameras may be connected to recording devices in the rental office on the property or the proprietor may have hired help in monitoring the place. Either way, the cameras can record a theft or vandalism in progress, which then becomes evidence for the police. Thankfully, most would-be criminals see the cameras and try to avoid the cameras' lines of sight.

Alarms on the Doors and Coded Keypads on the Units

Alarms on the entry doors and/or alarms on the doors of every unit may make you feel more secure as well. Some storage facilities are now doing away with padlocks (because they can be cut off with a bolt cutter) and are instead installing coded keypads on the units. When you punch in your code and hit the "enter" button, the door rolls up like a garage door to give you access.

Hired Help

Hired security help in the storage facility comes in two forms; the human guard kind and the offsite security company kind. The guards may be posted around the clock, or only during evening and overnight hours. The security company has a direct feed into the CCTV cameras and/or alarm systems used by the proprietor of the facility and the security company can then call the police in the event that there is a crime being committed. If you really want tight-knit security with your storage unit, go with a facility that uses all of the above.
